Reimagining Tradition
Japanese crafts are a source of fascination for craft enthusiasts around the world. The distinctive nature of Japanese crafts is a result of the country's unique history, rich culture, strong social structures and historical commitment to excellence. However, Japanese crafts are also changing and adapting to modern times. The result is a craft culture that is both deeply rooted in tradition and dynamically evolving in the modern world.
This exhibition features a selection of artists, each trained in traditional techniques and ingrained in Japanese culture. Yet they reimagine the ancient knowledge - creating fresh and modern objects without losing the quality that comes from time-honoured techniques. The result is a showcase of the enduring methods still used by today's artisans. And the exciting new horizons that are emerging from these traditions.
