Fujii Seisakusho, is a studio, run by the husband-and-wife duo Kenichi and Minako Fujii. Each piece is handmade, making mass production impossible, but they strive to showcase the diverse possibilities of lacquer.
This was the very first plate they created, and it remains one of their most popular pieces. Its simplicity is paired with a carefully calculated form that makes it exceptionally easy to use.
The surface is finished with a technique called makiji. Makiji involves sprinkling a natural powder—such as powdered diatomaceous earth— onto the surface and then sealing it with layers of lacquer. This creates a beautifully textured finish that is not only visually appealing but also resistant to scratches, making it ideal for daily use and special occasion.
